The Greeley West baseball team used an eight-run third inning and strong pitching by junior Tyler Holmes to hold off Fort Collins, 9-7, at Fort Collins High School on Tuesday afternoon.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Spartans battled back in the third when they batted around with seven singles and a handful of Fort Collins errors. Holmes, Riley Colbeth, Luis DeLeon, Alex Holguin, Taylor Berens and Tyler Rebeterano each had an RBI in the frame as the Spartans took a 9-2 lead.
Holmes allowed just one hit in five innings of work, but still gave up five runs in the game. Fort Collins scored runs on two wild pitches and two errors in the game.
Both teams were sloppy at times, but West’s defense was able to turn two double plays – a big one in the sixth inning to thwart the Lambkins rally.
Cedric Corrales struggled with his control, but was able to close out the victory with two innings of relief. Aaron Rojas was the only Spartan hitter with two hits.
West improved to 2-3 in 5A Front Range League play and 4-7 overall. Fort Collins dropped to 4-2 in league and 8-4 overall. The Spartans return home for a game against Legacy on Thursday at 4 p.m.
