Spartans News · West hangs on to win after wild 7th inning

The Greeley West baseball team withstood a frantic Fossil Ridge comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning and held onto an 8-7 5A Front Range League win on Tuesday afternoon at Fossil Ridge High School.

Tyler Rebeterano (2-1) pitched the first four innings to earn the victory and Cedric Corrales picked up a 3-inning save on the mound, but it was anything but easy.  With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Fossil Ridge rallied behind five hits a wild pitch and two Greeley West errors.  In that same frame, it appeared that the game was over on a check-swing strikeout that was ruled ball four to load the bases.  Corrales kept his composure and finished the game with a strikeout on a 3-2 count and the runners moving on the pitch.

Until the seventh, West had dominated the game.  Tyler Holmes, Riley Colbeth, and Luis DeLeon each had two hits for the Spartans, who put up four-spots in the first and third innings.  DeLeon had the big hit in each frame:  a two-run homer in the first and a 2 RBI single in the third.

The Spartans, who improved to 5-6 in league play and 7-10 overall will travel to Rocky Mountain to finish conference play on Thursday.  Fossil Ridge fell to 3-8 in league and 8-10 overall.
